Mejores Tours y Viajes de Calama

Calama serves as a gateway to some of South America's most stunning landscapes. Though the city itself is an oasis of local markets and colonial charm, travelers primarily pass through to reach the surreal salt flats of Salar de Atacama and the otherworldly geysers of El Tatio, where steam erupts from the Andes each dawn. Just south lies San Pedro de Atacama, a rustic hub for exploring ancient adobe ruins, flamingo-filled lagoons, and vast lunar valleys. Rich copper veins beneath Calama fuel much of Chile's economy, yet its true value lies in access to nature's grandest spectacles - starlit altiplano skies, towering volcanoes, and shifting desert winds shaping one of Earth's driest regions.

4-Day San Pedro De Atacama Tour: Moon Valley and Toconao | An Oasis in the Desert

Stunning tour

I recently completed this 4-day itinerary, and I must say, the landscapes were absolutely stunning. The Moon Valley and the Mars Valley were highlights, offering some of the most unique views I've ever seen. The trip to Toconao and the Altiplanic Lagoons was also fantastic, with breathtaking scenery and informative local guides. The Tatio Geysers at dawn were an unforgettable experience, and the village of Machuca was charming. However, I would have appreciated a bit more free time on the final day before heading to the airport. Overall, a well-organized trip with spectacular natural wonders!

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de Calama

How do I get from Calama Airport to San Pedro de Atacama?

Take a shared shuttle or private transfer from El Loa Airport (CJC) to San Pedro de Atacama; the journey takes 1–1.5 hours. Reliable operators include Turbus, Andes Salt, and Travelo. Pre-book online or arrange at the airport arrivals hall. Taxis cost more but offer flexibility for groups.

What is the best time of year to visit Calama and the Atacama Desert?

Visit Calama and the Atacama Desert between March and November for dry, stable weather. Daytime temperatures are mild (15–25°C), and skies are clear, ideal for stargazing and outdoor excursions. Avoid January–February due to rare but disruptive Altiplanic rains.

Do I need an altitude pass or permit to visit attractions near Calama?

No general altitude pass is required for Calama (2,250m), but some high-altitude sites like Lagunas Altiplánicas or El Tatio require entry fees paid in cash (CLP). Acclimate in Calama or San Pedro for 1–2 days before ascending above 3,500m to avoid altitude sickness.

Is it safe to drink tap water in Calama?

Yes, tap water in Calama is generally safe to drink due to advanced desalination and treatment systems. However, tourists sensitive to mineral content may prefer bottled water, widely available at shops and hotels. Always carry water when touring the desert to prevent dehydration.
