This national monument dating back to 1672 is the only surviving 17th Century fort in North America and earliest masonry. Possession of the Castillo de San Marcos changed numerous times and it was the site of many battles during the Colonial Era. It also housed Native American prisoners for the U.S. during the Second Seminole War and was taken over by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
