Resting on the shore of the Danube River, Durnstein is a small Austrian town popular for its cobblestone streets, classical Austrian buildings, ruins of the Durnstein Castle, and wine of the Wachau Valley. The castle once acted as the prison for King Richard I of England during a dispute with the Duke of Austria during the Third Crusade and was destroyed in 1645. Located beneath these ruins, the town houses the Stiftkirche abbey whose interior features a Baroque style and artwork by Kresmer Schmidt.

The trip was very enjoyable

The trip was a very enjoyable experience. We had 3 meals every day that were really good. If I wanted to nit-pick I would say that the Italian dishes were not the chef's favorite, but everything was well done. The crew were all very friendly and efficient.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre tours de Durnstein

How do I get from Vienna to Durnstein and what’s the best way to travel without a car?

Take a train from Vienna Westbahnhof to Krems an der Donau, then transfer to a regional bus (line 626) or a Danube ferry in summer. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. The ferry offers scenic views and docks near Durnstein’s town center, making it an ideal car-free option.

When is the best time of year to visit Durnstein for wine and scenery?

The best time is late summer to early fall (September-October), during the wine harvest. The weather is mild, vineyards are lush, and local wineries host tastings. Spring (April–June) also offers blooming apricot orchards and fewer crowds, ideal for hiking and photography.

Is the climb to Dürnstein Castle ruins difficult, and is it suitable for families?

The hike to Dürnstein Castle ruins takes about 30-45 minutes uphill on a narrow, uneven stone path. It’s moderately challenging and not recommended for very young children or those with mobility issues. Sturdy footwear is advised. The panoramic views of the Danube Valley make it worthwhile for most able visitors.

What local pass covers transport and attractions in the Wachau Valley, including Durnstein?

The Wachau Card offers unlimited travel on regional buses and ferries along the Danube, including key towns like Durnstein, Melk, and Krems. It also includes entry to attractions like Aggstein Castle and discounts at wineries. Available at tourist offices and valid for 24-72 hours.
