The Royal Palace of Madrid, the city's largest building, today is only used for state ceremonies, but is open to the public year-round except on days of official ceremonies. Located next to magnificent Plaza de Oriente, the palace was built on the site of the old Alcazar, a Moorish castle destroyed by fire in 1734.
