The islands were originally constructed to protect the Uru people from attack, because the islands could be moved. The islands are maintained by the Uru people who add new reeds to the tops of the islands every 3 months to replace the reeds that rot away near the bottom of the islands.

3-Day Puno &Titicaca Islands Tour from Cusco: Titicaca Lake, Uros and Taquile

I loved how immersive this trip felt from start to finish. The historical visit to Andahuaylillas was fascinating, and Raqchi’s Inca ruins were far more impressive than expected. Cruising on Lake Titicaca was calm and scenic. Taquile Island’s traditional lifestyle and panoramic lake views made the journey unforgettable.
