Madrid’s most famous and central square lies within walking distance of Plaza Mayor. Puerta del Sol gets its name from having been one of the city’s gates in times past that faced east and was adorned with an image of the sun. It is here that the throngs gather on New Year’s Eve to count down the seconds to the New Year on the square’s clock tower, whereas millions of others throughout the country watch this clock from home.
