Best Circus Maximus Tours & Trips

Step into the heart of ancient Rome at Circus Maximus, where chariot races thrilled over 150,000 spectators beneath the Palatine Hill. Once the largest stadium in imperial Rome, this vast valley between the Palatine and Aventine Hills hosted the Ludi Romani and other public games for centuries. Though today only its sweeping outline remains, the site offers a powerful sense of history and scale. Nearby, the Forum, Colosseum, and Arch of Titus anchor a walk through Rome’s monumental past. Stroll at sunset when locals gather, jogging or relaxing where emperors once watched fiery races. Free to explore and rich in atmosphere, Circus Maximus connects visitors directly to the spirit of ancient Roman life.

7-Day Italian Holiday Tour from Rome: Venice, Verona and Florence | 2 Countries and 6 Cities | 6 Breakfasts, 4 Dinners

Molto bene!

Excellent tour and well-organized. So much was packed into this tour; probably not possible to experience this much if organized yourself, as you would need more like 10 days. Our director, Lino, was fantastic, very knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. He really made this a memorable tour. Our bus driver, Pepe, was also excellent. Highly recommend this tour.

FAQs about Circus Maximus Tours

How do I get to Circus Maximus from Rome Termini Station?

Take Metro Line B (blue line) toward Laurentina from Termini and get off at Circo Massimo station - it’s just two stops and takes under 10 minutes. Exit the station following signs for Via del Circo Massimo, and you’ll see the ancient chariot racetrack directly ahead. Alternatively, a 20-minute walk through the city center offers views of the Aventine and Palatine Hills.

Is there an entrance fee to visit the Circus Maximus in Rome?

No, entry to the Circus Maximus is free. The site is an open archaeological park, accessible daily from morning to evening. While there are no ticketed attractions, guided tours are available through the Rome city tourism office for deeper historical context. Always verify opening hours before visiting, as access may vary during special events.

What is the best time of year to visit Circus Maximus to avoid rain?

Visit Circus Maximus between May and June or September and early October for dry, pleasant weather. Rome’s rainy season typically runs from late October through December, with occasional showers in late winter. Spring and early autumn offer lower rainfall probability, shorter lines, and comfortable temperatures for exploring outdoor sites.

Can I combine a visit to Circus Maximus with nearby Roman landmarks?

Yes, Circus Maximus is steps from the Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, and Colosseum. Walk across the Via dei Cerchi to access the Forum entrance in 10 minutes. Include the Aventine Hill and Orange Garden for panoramic views. Use the Roma Pass for free public transport and skip-the-line access to major sites over 48-72 hours.
