Best Derry Tours & Trips

Although this city was once plagued by sectarian violence, its 17th-century city walls have never been breached and today form a walkway around the inner city. Derry, the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland, was the site of the Battle of the Bogside, a riot that occurred between police and Irish nationalists seen as one of the first major confrontations in “the Troubles,” as well as infamous Bloody Sunday when peaceful, unarmed protesters were fired on by British soldiers. The Museum of Free Derry and a granite obelisk commemorating 14 civilians who were shot dead on Bloody Sunday are located in the Bogside.

Excellent - we are only 11 on the bus and that was perfect. the guide was fantastic. My only criticism is not enough time when stopping for lunch to have lunch and look around the town. Our guide was very accommodating when we asked though. Would use again

FAQs about Derry Tours

What is the best time of year to visit Derry for mild weather and fewer crowds?

Visit Derry between May and September for milder weather and longer daylight. July and August are warmest (15-18°C) but busiest. For fewer crowds, choose May, June, or September - these months offer pleasant conditions with minimal tourist pressure and 8-10 hours of daylight. Rain is possible year-round, so pack a waterproof layer.

How do I get from Belfast International Airport to Derry city centre affordably?

Take the Ulsterbus 101 service from outside Belfast International Airport to Derry’s Foyle Street Bus Station. The journey takes 2 hours and costs around £12-£15 one-way. Services run up to 6 times daily. Pre-book tickets online via Translink for better fares. Avoid taxis, which cost over £100.

Is the City Walls pass worth it for tourists visiting Derry?

Yes - the Derry City Walls Visitor Pass (£12) includes entry to the walls, Guildhall access, and discounts at 10+ attractions like the Museum of Free Derry. It pays for itself after 2–3 visits. Purchase at the Visit Derry Tourist Office on Guildhall Square. Free audio walking tour included. Valid 72 hours.

Are there any cultural etiquette tips I should know before visiting Derry?

Avoid political discussions unless locals initiate them. Refrain from wearing overtly political clothing. Respect the city’s dual heritage - both unionist and nationalist communities. Use “Derry” or “Londonderry” neutrally; both are acceptable. Always ask before photographing homes or murals in residential areas. Greetings are informal – a smile and “hello” suffice.
