Best Independence Rock Tours in Winter

Wyoming's large granite landmark of the pioneer trails measures 1,900 feet long, 700 feet wide and 128 feet tall. Independence Rock contains the names of emigrants, travelers, trappers and others who passed it or camped near it throughout its many years. It is said to have gotten its name because emigrants heading to California and Oregon were supposed to reach the trail point by July 4 to avoid snowfall in the mountains. The rock is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and is the centerpiece of the Independence Rock State Historic Site.
