Best London Eye Tours & Trips

Also called the Millennium Wheel, this huge Ferris wheel along the River Thames has become a symbol of the City of London. When the London Eye was built in 1999, it held the title of the "World's Tallest Ferris Wheel" and is still the tallest in Europe at 443 feet by 394 feet. It was designed by Marks Barfield Architects and officially opened in 2000. The London Eye has 32 oval passenger capsules and the entire wheel can carry 800 people. Its rotation takes about a half-hour.

FAQs about London Eye Tours

Is the London Eye wheelchair accessible, and are there designated boarding areas for disabled visitors?

Yes, the London Eye is fully wheelchair accessible, with capsules designed to accommodate wheelchairs up to 700mm wide. Boarding takes place at the South Bank entrance, where staff assist with priority access. All public areas, including the queue and viewing platforms, are accessible via elevators.

What is the best time to visit the London Eye to avoid long queues and get clear views of London?

Visit early in the morning (around opening at 10:00 AM) or late in the evening after 6:00 PM to avoid peak crowds. Clear views are most likely on cool, dry days with low humidity - typically after a cold front passes in spring or autumn. Avoid weekends in July and August.

Can I use an Oyster card or contactless payment for entry to the London Eye?

No, Oyster cards and contactless Transport for London payments cannot be used for London Eye entry. Tickets must be purchased separately online or at the onsite box office. However, Oyster cards work on the Underground, buses, and river services to reach the South Bank location.

Is the London Eye operating during rainy weather, and does rain affect visibility from the capsule?

Yes, the London Eye operates in light rain, but may pause during heavy storms or high winds for safety. Rain can reduce visibility, especially in winter. For clearer views, choose a dry day with a high-pressure system - check the Met Office forecast for central London before visiting.
