Best Pantheon Tours & Trips

The wonderfully-preserved and often-copied Roman architectural treasure is said to have been first built between 27-25 BC on the site where the city's founder Romulus was collected by eagles and taken up to the gods after his death. After being damaged by two fires, the Pantheon was reconstructed between 118-125 AD under the Emperor Hadrian. It is the world's biggest masonry dome with a diameter of 142 feet and is dominated by its large Corinthian columns. The Pantheon has housed a Catholic church since the 7th Century and still occasionally has masses. Artist Michelangelo studied the building and likened its construction to the work of angels and not men.

FAQs about Pantheon Tours

Is the Pantheon in Rome free to visit, and are there skip-the-line options available?

Yes, entry to the Pantheon in Rome is free, though a €5 fee is charged during peak times for visitors who haven’t reserved in advance. To avoid long lines, especially in high season, booking a timed-entry ticket online through the official website or a trusted platform is recommended. Arriving early in the morning or late afternoon also reduces wait times.

What is the best time of year to visit the Pantheon in Rome to avoid crowds?

The best time to visit the Pantheon is between November and February, excluding holidays, when tourist numbers are lower. Mornings right at opening (9:00 AM) or late afternoons before closing offer shorter lines. Summer months, especially July and August, bring intense heat and heavy crowds, so off-peak seasons ensure a more comfortable experience.

Is photography allowed inside the Pantheon in Rome?

Yes, personal photography is allowed inside the Pantheon without flash. Tripods and selfie sticks are prohibited. Commercial photography requires prior authorization. The dome and oculus provide dramatic lighting, best captured midday when sunlight streams through. Respect other visitors and avoid obstructing passageways while taking photos.

How accessible is the Pantheon for visitors with mobility issues?

The Pantheon is partially accessible. The main entrance has a step, but a ramp can be deployed with staff assistance. Once inside, the interior is wheelchair accessible with no internal steps. Restrooms and exits are accessible, though nearby cobblestone streets may be challenging. Wheelchair users should contact the site in advance for smooth entry coordination.
