Best Salta Tours & Trips

Capital of the Salta Province and resting in the Lerma Valley, Salta is also known as Salta la Linda, or "Salta the Beautiful." Popular among tourists visiting the northern reaches of Argentina, this colonial city is known for its excellent weather, natural scenery, and rich history, evident in the city's colonial architecture. Many travelers have noticed the similarities between Salta and Andalucian cities of Spain. Lively and filled with events, Salta is very welcoming to tourists and invites them to join Salta tours and discover the neo-classical architecture, great art scene, and delectable food.

Best Time to Visit Salta

Spring 2026/2027
Spring is a season of transition and one of Salta’s most culturally significant periods. Temperatures begin to climb, ranging from 11°C to 26°C (52°F–79°F), and the air remains relatively dry until late November. In mid-September, the city hosts the massive Fiesta del Milagro, a week-long religious procession that brings hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the Cathedral. For nature lovers, this is the time when the arid desert begins to stir, and wildlife like vicuñas and condors are more active. The landscapes are at their most stark and dramatic before the summer rains return to turn them green. It is an excellent time for trekking in the Quebrada de Humahuaca or visiting the small artisan villages of the north, as you avoid both the summer rains and the winter night-freezes, enjoying moderate prices and manageable tourist numbers.

Summer 2026
Summer in Salta is the wettest and warmest time of year, characterized by lush green landscapes and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures typically range from 15°C to 28°C (59°F–82°F), though humidity can make the heat feel more intense. While the "Train to the Clouds" often pauses operations due to rain-related track maintenance, the city vibrates with energy during Carnival in February, featuring traditional water fights and Andean folk dances. This is the peak season for local tourists, so expect higher prices and bustling crowds. Travelers should be prepared for potential road closures in remote areas like the Cachi mountains, but the sight of the Lerma Valley in full bloom is spectacular. Indoor activities, like visiting the MAAM to see the Llullaillaco mummies, are great ways to escape midday downpours.

Autumn 2026
Autumn is widely considered one of the best times to visit Salta, as the heavy rains taper off, leaving behind a verdant countryside and crisp, clear blue skies. Temperatures are incredibly comfortable, ranging from 11°C to 23°C (52°F–73°F). As the humidity drops, visibility in the surrounding mountains improves, making it the perfect window for the legendary Train to the Clouds as it resumes its high-altitude journey. In the nearby Calchaquí Valleys, March marks the wine harvest season (Vendimia), where visitors can participate in grape picking and tastings at world-class vineyards in Cafayate. The light in autumn is soft and golden, ideal for photography of the colorful rock formations in the Quebrada de las Conchas. Crowds are thinner than in summer, providing a much more relaxed pace for exploring colonial architecture.

Winter 2026/2027
Winter is the driest season in the Argentine Northwest, offering almost guaranteed sunshine and deep blue skies every day. While daytime temperatures are pleasant, averaging 3°C to 21°C (37°F–70°F), the high altitude means nights can be bone-chillingly cold, often dropping below freezing. This is the prime season for exploring the high-altitude salt flats of Salinas Grandes, as the lack of rain ensures the white expanse is perfectly accessible. August is particularly special due to the Pachamama (Mother Earth) celebrations, where local communities perform ancient Andean rituals. Because this is the "low" season for humidity and rain, it is the most reliable time for long-distance road trips through the Puna. However, be sure to pack "onion-style" layers to handle the dramatic 20-degree temperature swings between high noon and midnight.

4-Day Classic Salta & Jujuy Tour

Absolutely Incredible!!

I sent an email to Tangol Tours only a couple weeks before arriving in Salta. Mateo from their company arranged 3 full day tours - even though one fell on a major holiday - the 200th anniversary of Argentina's independence! He is clearly one of the most knowledgable travel agents we have ever used. The first day our tour took us to almost 14,000 feet - the viaduct where the train to the clouds travels. Being with him was so much better than a long bus ride and 20 km on the train!! He constantly checked on us to make sure we were not getting sick from the altitude. He adjusted our trip to stop and see everything, or just to take pictures. When we arrived back in Salta, he made sure we had great local food for dinner. The second day, Mateo again arrived bright and early so that we could see all the little villages on our way to Cafayate. As we drove through the amazing views, Mariano knew exactly where to stop to avoid the crowds. He picked an amazing inn outside of the city for lunch, so that we would not fight the crowds. AND he was incredibly patient as we walked the mercado in search of a chess set!! Our 3 days in Salta and jujuy were wonderful and left us wanting more!!! We all highly recommend their travel agency, ask for Mateo and hold on for the ride!!!

FAQs about Salta Tours

How do I get from Salta to Cafayate and what’s the best time of year to make the trip?

Travel from Salta to Cafayate by taking RN68, a scenic 180-km route through the Calchaquí Valleys (approx. 3 hours by car). The best time to go is during the dry season, from March to November, when road conditions are optimal and rainfall is minimal. April to May offers pleasant temperatures and fall foliage, enhancing the landscape’s dramatic red rock formations. Regular bus services also operate daily between the two towns.

Is public transportation reliable for visiting the Quebrada de las Conchas from Salta?

Public transportation to Quebrada de las Conchas is limited; most visitors opt for guided tours or rented vehicles. Buses to Cafayate pass through parts of the quebrada, but access to key viewpoints like Los Sosa, Amadores, and the Garganta del Diablo requires off-route detours. Tour operators offer round-trip transportation with entry fees included, providing the most reliable and informative option for independent travelers without a car.

What local pass or card helps save on entrance fees to Salta’s regional attractions?

Salta does not currently offer a city-wide tourist pass for attractions. Admission fees at sites like MAAM (Museum of High Altitude Archaeology) and historical estates in the valleys are paid individually. However, booking multi-attraction tours through certified agencies often includes bundled entry and transport, offering comparable savings. Always verify inclusions and group size before purchase to ensure value.

What should I know about altitude sickness when visiting Salta (elevation 1,200m / 3,937ft)?

At 1,200m, Salta's altitude rarely causes severe sickness, but it can still affect sensitive individuals, especially when proceeding to higher sites like Purmamarca (3,300m) or the Salinas Grandes. Acclimatize for 24 hours in Salta—avoid alcohol, stay hydrated, and rest upon arrival. Consider sipping mate de coca, a locally used herbal tea believed to ease symptoms. Seek medical help if dizziness or nausea persists.
