Best The Egyptian Museum Tours & Trips

Home to the world's most extensive collection of Pharaonic antiquities, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo stands as a gateway to ancient wonders on Tahrir Square. Its vast halls house over 120,000 artifacts, including the glittering treasures of Tutankhamun – golden masks, thrones, and burial objects that captivate every visitor. Wander through galleries lined with mummies, statues of gods, and hieroglyph-carved stelae, then step outside to glimpse the Nile and nearby Islamic Cairo. Though the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids is opening in phases, this iconic pink mansion remains essential for understanding Egypt’s legendary past.

Great value for money, covered a lot of ground!

EXCELLENT tour of the Pyramids and camping in the desert. This was such a memorable experience that I will remember for a lifetime! Farag was my driver and main tour guide. He listened to the things that I wanted to do and tailored the experience for me. We walked through downtown Cairo, ate ice cream, and had a great lunch at a local restaurant off the beaten path. Thank you Farag for making this experience so special! I will not forget :)

FAQs about The Egyptian Museum Tours

Is the Egyptian Museum in Cairo still open after the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum?

Yes - the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir remains open as of 2024. While some artifacts have moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the downtown Cairo museum still houses extensive collections, including Tutankhamun’s original treasures and royal mummies. Check ahead for exhibit updates and reduced displays due to ongoing transfers.

What is the best time to visit the Egyptian Museum in Cairo to avoid crowds?

Visit early at opening (9 AM) or late afternoon (after 3 PM) on weekdays - especially Saturday or Tuesday. Avoid weekends and holidays when local tourists visit. Mondays are often closed, so Friday and Sunday see peak traffic. Arriving early ensures cooler temperatures and fewer distractions during viewing.

How do I buy tickets for the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and are audio guides available?

Purchase tickets directly at the museum entrance; online options are limited. International visitors pay a higher rate in foreign currency. Audio guides are available for rent onsite (approx. $10 USD). Alternatively, download the official museum app in advance for self-guided tours in multiple languages.

Can I photograph inside the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and are there restrictions?

Photography is allowed in most galleries without flash - tripods and selfie sticks require special permission. Some temporary exhibits or mummy display rooms may prohibit photos entirely. A photography permit (approx. $30) is required for professional equipment. Always check signs at exhibit entrances for current rules.
